1. Load your card
Accepts .json, .png, .charx and .txt, or paste the card text below.
The .png download appears when you load a PNG card. To turn repaired JSON into a PNG card, use the JSON to TavernAI PNG converter.
What the repair tool fixes
JSON syntax
- Trailing commas, missing commas and missing colons
- Single quotes, smart (curly) quotes and unquoted property names
- Comments, a byte-order mark, invisible characters, and a markdown code fence or text pasted around the JSON
- Raw line breaks and stray quote marks inside text, and invalid backslash escapes
- Python-style
True,FalseandNone - Files that were cut off: open strings, lists and objects are closed so the part that survived is kept
- JSON that was stored inside a text string (double-encoded)
Card structure
- V2/V3 fields sitting outside the
dataobject, and a missing or wrongspec/spec_version - Missing text fields,
nullvalues, and numbers where text belongs tagsoralternate_greetingsstored as one string instead of a list- Missing
extensions, and lorebook entries that are keyed by id, missingkeys, or have a non-booleanenabled
PNG cards
- Damaged or URL-safe base64 in the
chara/ccv3metadata chunk - Bad chunk checksums (CRC) and a missing IEND chunk
- The image itself is kept as it is. Only the metadata chunk is rewritten.
What it cannot fix
Repair works from the text that is actually in the file. If a file was cut off, the missing part is gone, and the tool only keeps what survived. A card that lost its image data cannot be rebuilt as a PNG, though the card JSON can usually still be recovered. A field with garbled characters from a wrong text encoding is reported but not rewritten, because the original characters cannot be reliably guessed. Always compare the result with the original before you replace it.
Nothing is rewritten, summarized or improved: the character’s text is left as written, and unknown fields are kept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why will my character card not import?
Usually the JSON is broken (a stray comma, curly quotes, a truncated file), the V2 fields are not inside a data object, or the PNG metadata is damaged. Load the card here to see what is wrong and fix it.
Will the repair change my character?
No. It only changes syntax and structure. Your character's text is kept as written, unknown fields are preserved, and every change is listed so you can check it.
Can it recover a truncated card?
It recovers the part of the card that is still in the file by closing any open strings, lists and objects. Anything that was cut off is lost, so keep the original and compare the result.
Does it work on PNG cards?
Yes. It reads the card from the PNG metadata, repairs it, and writes a clean PNG with the same image and a correctly checksummed metadata chunk. If the image data itself is damaged, you still get the card JSON.
Is my card uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and the card never leaves your device.
