How to read the numbers
Permanent tokens
Description, personality, scenario, example dialogue, system prompt, post-history instructions and any lorebook entry set to “constant” are included in the prompt on every message. This is the cost your character always pays, and it shrinks the room left for chat history.
First message and alternate greetings
The first message enters the chat once. Alternate greetings are only used if you pick one, so they are listed but not added to the starting total.
Lorebook entries
Entries that are not constant are only inserted when their keywords appear in the chat, so they are listed separately and not added to the permanent total.
Creator notes
Creator notes are for people reading the card. They are not sent to the model, so they are shown for reference and never counted against your context.
Estimates, not exact counts
Every model family splits text into tokens differently, and an exact count needs that model’s own tokenizer. This page estimates the count with a method that follows how common tokenizers split words, numbers, punctuation and line breaks, with no download and no network use. Treat the figure as a guide and leave some headroom.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tokens is my character card?
Load the card to see an estimate for each field and the total. Permanent tokens are sent with every message; the first message is added once at the start of the chat.
Is this the exact token count?
No. It is an estimate. Each model family has its own tokenizer, so exact counts differ a little. The estimate is based on how common tokenizers split text and is meant as a planning guide.
Which fields count as permanent tokens?
Description, personality, scenario, example dialogue, system prompt, post-history instructions, and lorebook entries marked constant. Creator notes are never sent to the model.
How many tokens should a character card use?
There is no single right number. It depends on your context window. Pick your context size above to see what share of it the card takes, and keep enough room for chat history and the reply.
Is my card uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting runs in your browser and the card never leaves your device.
